The conference on the settlement of the military conflict in Ukraine, held in strict secrecy in Copenhagen, was attended by the countries of the global South, which take a neutral position in the war between the Russian Federation and Ukraine.
A peace conference on Ukraine was held in Denmark in conditions of strict secrecy. As reported on Monday, June 26, radio station Deutschlandfunk, in addition to representatives of several Western countries, it was also attended by diplomats from countries in the global South, including China, India, Brazil and South Africa. These countries have so far taken a largely neutral or low-key stance in the war in Ukraine.
According to the public-legal broadcaster ARD, official peace talks on Ukraine with the participation of these countries may take place as early as July. The Danish media and the AFP news agency reported that the initiative to hold the conference came from Ukraine.
The head of the German Foreign Ministry highly appreciated the mediation of South Africa
Before her visit to South Africa, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock highly appreciated the attempt of peaceful mediation by the heads of African governments. In a guest commentary published by the Sunday Times in Pretoria on Sunday, June 25, she named an important voice of South Africa in the international arena and recalled the former president of this country and Nobel Peace Prize winner Nelson Mandela, as well as human rights activist Desmond Tutu. “If the country of Mandela and Desmond Tutu is against injustice, the world is listening,” she stressed.
According to Burbock, she understands that South Africans living nine thousand kilometers away do not want to interfere and understand the military conflict between Ukraine and Russia. “But I want to encourage everyone to ask themselves the question: What kind of reaction would I expect from the international community if this war was unfolding in my neighborhood?” she wrote.
Annalena Burbock will meet her colleague Naledi Pandor on 27 June in Pretoria. At the same time, the position towards Russia will play a central role in the negotiations. Officially, the South African authorities declared their neutrality in connection with the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
In mid-June, a delegation of African heads of state and government visited Kiev and Moscow to discuss a possible peace plan between Ukraine and Russia. The initiative had no notable success.
