Due to disputes over the rights of minorities, Hungary is determined to block the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, and as a condition for lifting its veto calls the granting of the status of a candidate for membership for Georgia.
This is stated in the publication of the journalist of “Radio Liberty” Rikard Dzhozwiak, reports “European Truth” .
Some of Jozwiak’s EU interlocutors believe that Ukraine will get the green light to start accession talks before the end of the year, but Hungary can still veto.
“During the discussion in Brussels after the presentation of the report (on the implementation of the recommendations of the European Commission. – Ed.), Hungary was very critical of Kiev because it is not doing enough to ensure the rights of minorities,” he notes.
One option in which Budapest would still approve the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU is to grant Georgia the status of a candidate for membership, which it was denied last year due to the rollback of reforms.
“In recent years, the Georgian government has been developing a much closer relationship with Budapest,” Jozwiak said, predicting that reaching a consensus on Georgia’s candidacy “will be a challenge, to put it mildly,” especially given its failure to implement nine of the 12 European Commission recommendations.
Recall that on Thursday, June 22, the European Commission presented an oral assessment of Ukraine’s progress on the path to the EU. The European Commission believes that Ukraine has fully complied with two of the seven conditions necessary to start negotiations on membership, and progress has been made on the remaining conditions.
As stated in the European Pravda article, the EC report on Ukraine is generally positive and aims to help Kyiv cope with the problems – there are several of them, but Brussels does not consider them insurmountable.
